HAVE WE GOT A CAT FOR YOU
UPDATED 01/12/2010
After the pyramids and the kohl-painted eyes, almost nothing evokes more awe and mystery than the fascination ancient Egyptians had with cats.
Cats were not only the most popular pets in the Egyptian house, but their status rose to that of sacred animals and then on to the most esteemed deities like no other creature before them.
If you want a cat or kitten to worship, keep mice and other pests out of your pyramid, or simply enjoy their regal presence, come by the Shelter and check out the Cattery; you can have the pick of the litter (so to speak).
Many colors, breeds and temperaments are patiently waiting at the Shelter for you to give them their rightful place in your Palace. Each will give you a bounty of love and adoration in return.

Whatever your preference in cats, from white to black and all colors and markings in between, you will most likely find what you want in the Cattery in the main shelter.
Our selection ranges from some of the cutest and most playful kittens in town to the more mature and sedate ones looking for a soft lap and a heart to fill with love.
Just as with our dogs, we have a good success rate in placing the cats, so if you don't find your best match today, check back in a day or two and chances are you will soon find the perfect fit.
As with all our Shelter animals, our cats have been checked by the Vet and have been given a clean Bill of Health. We do ask that if it has not been done, you have your cat spayed or neutered; the Shelter provides you with a card giving you a 50% discount on the cost of the procedure.
Take a look below at some of our cats ready for adoption today.

When cats first come into the Shelter, they are immediately given blood tests. When the blood test is negative, (no Leukemia), then they are in isolation for a minimum 5 days to observe for signs of any OTHER diseases, problems,
Once there is no issue on this front, they are given the standard intake routine and are ready for your lap and to chase a few mice if any happen around your place.
Just as dogs, cats love to play with their humans and so the Shelter has volunteers that come and play with the kittens/cats so they don't feel left out of life.
Here Barb Hess plays with some of the cats.
You can read more about Barb on our Volunteers page.
Can you tell this lady loves cats - - or what?
Check out the video at the page bottom from Barb, our resident "Cat Lady."
CODY and CHISHOLM: These nearly-identical baby brothers were rescued young from a semi-feral group of cats in the west part of Ajijic, and tamed by a conscientious Mom before coming to the shelter. Curious and playful, these guys will charm your socks off. This chunky twosome will be quite large cats if one can judge by their weight at 9 weeks of age, and handsome grey coats with white accents will make for elegant adults. BORN Nov 09
RUSTY: This gorgeous flame-point Siamese boy was covered in car grease when rescued from underneath a vehicle in Guadalajara. Obviously once a pet, he had suffered some terrifying experiences and is still a little nervous around strangers, although he cuddles right in a purrs up a storm when he knows you mean no harm. A playful adolescent, Rusty loves to "catch" toy mice. His color points will darken with age, making him one striking dude. BORN Aug 09
VALENTINO: Dark tabby markings belie Valentino's origins, since Mom was a lynx-point Siamese-cross. He is very active and will insist on playmates, or else a lot of toys and/or personal attention when he's ready to rough-house. But then it's time for cuddles and pets in your lap or at your side. This is a very self-assured young man. We doubt he will ever be very large. BORN July 09
ELLIOT: Beautiful grey tabby with white markings make this boy stand out in any crowd. And his sweet, affectionate, inquisitive personality can't be beat. He loves people, and wants lots of attention and cuddling. In return he will reach out and stroke the side of your cheek. Found on the street in Chapala, he was obviously lost or "tossed", and we are thrilled that this little boy's life will get a second chance. You cannot go wrong choosing him for your family. BORN Sept 09

NAOMI:Naomi was rescued by a Mexican family when pregnant, and kept at their home while she raised her babies. They placed two, but brought her and one baby when the kitten (now adopted) was 8 weeks old . Nursing, and already pregnant again, the then 10 1/2 month old young lady had been through a lot! This elegant cat could be a purebred "Havana Brown" except for one slight problem -- she's coal black (tiny spot on throat excepted). Her short, sleek coat and oriental lines make her a really gorgeous adult who DESPERATELY wants to leave the group-style living at the shelter in favor of a place of her own where she can shine and show what a wonderful pet she can be. Naomi truly needs a chance, and needs it soon. Could you be the one for her? BORN OCT 08

CHELSEA: Foreigners leaving the area did not want to pay the plane fare for their 3 cats, so callously dumped them in the street where they lived. Luckily a local Mexican resident rescued them and brought them to us. Chelsea was 6 1/2 months old and already pregnant, but a quick trip to the vet solved that problem, and now she's waiting to get back to the life she knew and loved, being a pet in a private home. She just hopes this time it will be with someone who realizes adoption is for keeps! This sweet girl loves attention but is not as high-action as some (like Valentino). She will make a lovely companion for a quiet person. BORN May 09

ROMONA: Bone-thin, scruffy, and terrified describes Ramona when she was rescued on the streets at 6 1/2 months of age. This already-pregnant girl weighed no more than a 3-month-old, and was a complete basket-case. Food, surgery, and a month of concentrated effort finally paid off, and she was at last mentally able to enter the main cage for more than a few moments. (She feared the "openness"). What a change a few weeks can make! Now she is out-going, friendly, and demands attention unless she gets distracted by a favorite toy. She even greets people as they enter the main cage!.This is a really wonderful cat, and we hope the right person comes along who will appreciate her. Due to previous trauma, we are insisting she be an INDOOR cat 24 / 7, with people who are not high-strung or aggressive. BORN May 09
GERALDINE: This little charmer will steal your heart, or else play with your untied shoelaces by the hour -- whichever you like! She came to us off the streets, underweight and bony, but is growing into a fat and sassy young lady in front of our eyes. So far she's never met a stranger, and we hope she never is given reason to change. She loves friends, but could also adapt to a one-cat home. Give her a look! BORN Oct 09

ASHLEY: Clients at the vet clinic next door rushed to find Barb one morning after they spied an adult cat and a kitten huddled up against the outside of the window glass of the reception area! Ashley and her Mom (since adopted) had most definitely been abandoned there that morning(Mom was wearing a collar), since the overnight Rottweiler loose in the yard would have made short work of the pair. It took Ashley a little while to get over the trauma, but now she's a happy little girl who will play independently but also demands serious lap time and cuddles. Elegant, dark long tabby hair with white accents will only get better as she matures. BORN Sept 09

LAURA: When she was just a baby this clever girl ran across the carretera one evening right in front of Barb's car, so of course an immediate rescue operation ensued. She has a habit of sucking the pad of one front foot (like sucking a thumb?) that probably stems from early separation from Mom, but this causes no problems and she'll likely outgrow it in time. As with all tortoiseshell cats, Laura can be a little independent, but time is teaching her to crave attention more and more, and she would reward anyone with love and affection as long as they give it on her terms! Please give this long, lithe girl a good look and a chance. BORN May 09.

TEDDY: Teddy arrived at the shelter with his lower chin all peeled back, due to an injury, and had to have it surgically repaired. Whatever happened to him is also the probable cause of a strangely curled-under tail that seems to have less sensation than normal. But this lovable, cuddly, super.affectionate boy makes up for slight appearance differences with his endearing ways and his DEMAND that you pick him up, hold him, and treat him like a living Teddy-bear! He should probably be an indoor boy, and while he loves friends what he wants most is PEOPLE in his life. Please give this hard-luck-start little boy a serious thought. BORN Oct 09

RINGO: Ringo's parents lived in a large compound owned by a Mexican family. The kittens were brought indoors as soon as possible, and tamed with hand-feeding and lots of physical contact. Siblings were all placed in good homes, but little Ringo had to come to us when the family needed to move back to the city unexpectedly. He's a very adventurous boy and runs a mile-a-minute when playing, yet he's happy to cuddle in your arms and reach up and stroke your chin as soon as the energy is burned off. You would have a lot of fun with this baby. BORN Oct 09

BARNEY and BAILEY: Can you tell the difference in these nearly identical twin brothers? They WERE discovered in the Honda car plant by a Mexican man who was fumigating one night, and brought to us the next day. He even asked us to give him a letter to take back to the plant, stating that we had received the kittens and would assume responsibility for them! Barney was nearly comatose from dehydration, and both were very hungry, but a few days of special treatment and lots of extra goodies and they are well on their way. Playful, friendly, and fun, this pair will catch your heart. They nearly used up one life that night. Will you be the one to see that they enjoy the remaining eight? BORN Nov 09
